Safety Officers and Ride Leaders/Road Captain Responsibilities
Ride Leaders/Road Captain – Safety Officers
Ride Leaders/Road Captain(RL/RC):
- Charged with monitoring road & traffic conditions.
- Initiate turns to follow route.
- Schedule breaks when appropriate for fuel, rest, etc.
- Encourage members to inform them of pertinent info prior to Kick Stands Up (KSU).
- Ensure all participants know the directions to return home before leaving the final destination.
- Insure safety briefing is presented prior to the ride.
- Plans safe routes for organized rides.
- When the group formation gets separated, the RC:
- Slows down but maintains a safe speed congruent with current traffic conditions until the rear catches up with formation, or pulls over in a safe setting to allow restoration of the group. If the entire pack is not regrouped in an expected time, the RC calls the SO to assess the situation.
Safety Officer (Ride Tailgunner Position):
- Is responsible to, and assists the Ride Leader/Road Captain(RL/RC) in the performance of their duties.
- May be required to assume the duties of Ride Leader/Road Captain(RL/RC).
- Ride at the rear of the group (except when conditions dictate otherwise) unless required to take on the responsibilities of The Ride Leader/Road Captain(RL/RC).
- Ride where they can see the formation the best.
- As the group prepares to make a lane change, the SO makes the lane change as soon as is safe to keep the lane clear for the group to move into the new lane.
- Inform the RL/RC of safety issues prior to the ride, or as soon as reasonable as determined by the SO.
- Present the safety briefing prior to KSU as directed by the RC.
All road captains and safety officers are charged with:
- Being familiar with organized group riding, safety brief and accident scene procedures.
- Attend group safety officer meetings.
